Can Scottish heritage feel luxurious without losing authenticity? Kilt Couture’s refined rebrand argues yes, with style.
Kilt Couture, a bespoke kilt-making studio that comes from centuries of Scottish tradition, knows a thing or two about craftsmanship.
Founded by Judith Pegram, a certified kilt-maker who’s mastered traditional techniques and earned her place among Scotland’s skilled artisans, Kilt Couture has been creating meticulous Scottish attire for clients who value quality over mass production. But during this time, the brand identity hadn’t caught up to the calibre of the work. Judith needed positioning that reflected what made her different: this isn’t mass produced tartan souvenirs or generic Highland dress. This is bespoke Scottish attire where every stitch is intentional, every detail considered, every garment a wearable piece of heritage. Her existing brand felt underdeveloped and didn’t stand out in a market cluttered with tourist tartan-ware and costume-like Scottish fashion. That’s where I came in, to create a brand identity that finally matched her expertise.
My work was cut out. I needed to craft a brand that captured a delicate balance: Scottish heritage without feeling costume-like or touristy, luxury positioning without losing authenticity, and bespoke craftsmanship without corporate coldness. The work began with understanding what Judith actually creates, not just kilts, but the kind of bespoke commissions that become family heirlooms and celebration centrepieces.
This led me to position Kilt Couture as luxury craftsmanship rooted in Scottish tradition, designed for clients who value individuality over mass production. All the elements I created (the flowing needle symbol, the refined serif typography, the heritage colour palette of red, blue, and gold) backed into this ethos of tradition meeting luxury, heritage meeting contemporary fashion. Each element played an integral part in conveying that Scottish heritage deserves to be celebrated through quality, not clichés.
Here’s why that positioning mattered: most Scottish fashion brands either lean heavily into tourist kitsch or try so hard to modernise that they lose connection to tradition. Judith needed to differentiate as a luxury craftswoman who honours centuries of technique whilst creating pieces for contemporary clients. My job through the brand refresh was to represent Kilt Couture as premium bespoke fashion with authentic Scottish roots, proving that heritage and luxury aren’t opposites, they’re partners. The resulting brand identity mirrors Judith’s philosophy: her “fingerprint in fabric” approach, where craftsmanship, individuality, and tradition combine.

During discovery, what struck me most was Judith’s deep respect for traditional techniques combined with her commitment to creating uniquely personal pieces. Working with artisans means honouring their craft whilst helping them communicate its value to clients who might not understand the hundreds of hours behind a single garment. Judith reflected on the process: “Jade has listened to my story and heard more than I thought I had to say about my brand, and she has brought my business to life in abundance! Every aspect of my journey with her has been amazing, from my initial Discovery Call through to the outstanding and awesome end result. I can see the passion and commitment that Jade gave to me, as she would anyone asking for her help and professional creativity.”
I translated that craftsmanship into the logo design. The primary wordmark combines elegant serif typography with a flowing needle symbol (the needle acting as a visual thread that weaves through the composition, much like the careful stitching that connects each piece of tartan). The vertical arrangement mirrors the traditional process of kiltmaking, where each pleat is methodically crafted and positioned with meticulous precision. As the most immediate visual touchpoint for the brand, the logo feels established yet elegant, traditional yet refined. Sophisticated, premium, and uniquely ownable to Kilt Couture.
The complete logo suite includes multiple variations: the vertical wordmark with integrated needle detail, the horizontal layout for flexibility, the circular emblem featuring the iconic Scottish Thistle for merchandise and labels, the refined “KC” monogram for smaller applications, and the clean text only wordmark. The structured elegance reflects the precision required in kiltmaking, where every pleat must align perfectly, every measurement must be exact, every detail must be considered.

The typography system consists of carefully selected fonts that work together to reflect the duality of the brand. The serif font for headings brings elegance, credibility, and timelessness. It feels established, like a heritage brand that’s been perfecting its craft for generations. The decorative script adds artisanal, handcrafted quality that reflects the bespoke nature of Judith’s work, feeling personal and intimate. The supporting sans serif provides clean, modern aesthetic with excellent legibility, balancing heritage fonts with contemporary readability. This typographic system allows Kilt Couture’s content to maintain consistent sophistication whether telling Judith’s story on the website, showcasing garments on Instagram, or creating luxury packaging.
I structured the colour palette to honour Scottish heritage whilst maintaining luxury positioning. Heritage Red anchors the palette in Scottish tradition, the colour of tartans and passionate craftsmanship. Deep Blue evokes Scotland’s dramatic landscapes, the colour of Highland lochs and trustworthy expertise. Golden Yellow brings warmth reminiscent of Highland sunsets, the colour of celebration and optimism. Rich Purple grounds everything, the colour of heather covered hills and lasting legacy. Deep Green represents Scotland’s natural beauty and enduring strength. Soft Cream provides refined contrast, allowing other colours to shine whilst maintaining sophistication.
Whilst I was creating a premium brand identity appropriate for luxury fashion positioning, it was equally important to maintain authentic connection to Scottish heritage. This was achieved through the careful colour choices and symbolic elements, where every design decision connected back to Scotland’s landscapes, traditions, and centuries of craftsmanship. I wanted the brand to work equally well on bespoke garment labels and Instagram posts, connecting the dots between traditional technique and contemporary luxury.
The complete brand system (spanning website design, social media presence, packaging, marketing materials, and branded merchandise) creates consistency across all of Kilt Couture’s touchpoints whilst maintaining the flexibility needed for bespoke commissions. Whether Judith is creating Highland dress for weddings or contemporary Scottish fashion for everyday wear, the brand maintains its heritage authenticity and luxury positioning.
Judith concluded: “She is truly brilliant at her work, and I would recommend her without a shadow of a doubt; my business is definitely basking in the light of her glory, and I am so very full of gratitude to Jade!”
